Player Creation

Creating a player character, for someone who can barely draw stick figures, was a daunting task but something I was ready to delve into. Based on some limited work I had done previously using Aseprite, we decided a 2D game was more suitable to work towards and fit with the style of games we were more familiar with. With a concept of uncorrupting a forest, we decided the main character would be an animal. Now what’s the first animal you think of when you think of a forest? That’s right! A squirrel! So began my attempt to design a squirrel that would fit with our futuristic forest.

Because we’re making a rogue-like game involving shooting of other animals (sorry PETA) to uncorrupt them, our squirrel player had to be bipedal and holding a gun/weapon in its arms. After making a basic squirrel with a soldierlike appearance, I started messing around with the look and created a skunk and a bear. We considered using them to provide variety for player selection and with the idea of uncorrupting animals, they could be allies for the final boss. Due to time constraints, we scrapped the allies idea and went with just the squirrel.
